Max Mara Ludmilla Coat Review: Sizing, Fabric & My Honest Experience

Max Mara Ludmilla: The Coat I Kept Coming Back To

A personal review of the fabric, fit, sizing, care, and an unexpected return experience.

Hi, unnis and friends —

Today, I want to talk about a winter coat I've genuinely fallen for: the Max Mara Ludmilla.

Max Mara has several signature coat styles, but Ludmilla is the one I keep coming back to. There's something about its fluid sheen and relaxed, elegant silhouette that makes it feel special without trying too hard.

If you're considering one for yourself, I'll walk you through the fabric, how I chose my size, how I care for it, and what happened when my first order didn't arrive quite as expected. Everything here is based on my own experience, including the parts that weren't perfect.

All photos in this post are my own.

First Impressions: Fabric, Color, and Weight

The first thing I noticed when I unfolded the coat was the fabric.

It's 100% cashmere, finished in a way that gives the surface a subtle sheen that shifts beautifully with the light. Rather than looking simply shiny, it has a soft, fluid quality that I find particularly beautiful.

I studied design, so I tend to notice the way a fabric moves and falls. With Ludmilla, the drape was one of the things that stood out to me most. The cashmere settles into soft, natural folds instead of feeling stiff or overly structured.

I chose tobacco, and I love the depth of the color. It leans warm without feeling flat, and it works beautifully with the muted colors I tend to wear in winter.

The coat also feels surprisingly light when you pick it up. Once you're wearing it, though, it's warm enough to feel almost cocoon-like.

Sizing: How Ludmilla Actually Fits

Sizing is probably the hardest part of buying a coat online. I've found that trying to match a size to a particular body type isn't always very helpful, because the way you want a coat to fit matters just as much as your measurements.

So take my experience as a reference, rather than a rule.

My height: 5'4" (164 cm) Usual top size: S Size I chose: IT 40

Ludmilla has a drop-shoulder, oversized silhouette. It skims the body rather than following the figure closely.

In the IT 40, I had plenty of room to wear a chunky knit underneath, and the overall silhouette felt full and generous. For me, that extra volume was part of the appeal. The sleeves did feel slightly long on me — if you look at Max Mara's own lookbook shots, the models tend to have proportionally shorter arms, so keep that in mind.

I also tried the IT 38. It sat noticeably closer to the body and gave me a more fitted look.

For my personal style, I preferred the 40. The extra room allowed the coat to drape more naturally, and the below-the-knee length also felt more balanced in that size. As a general rule of thumb: if you have longer arms and legs, I'd lean toward the 40; if you prefer a more compact, closer fit, the 38 is the better choice.

My biggest tip with Ludmilla is not to size down just because the coat feels oversized.

I also wouldn't cinch the belt too tightly. Tie it loosely and let the cashmere fall naturally. To me, that's when Ludmilla's relaxed, signature silhouette really comes through.

What I Love About It

  • That effortless, "just thrown on" silhouette that instantly pulls an outfit together
  • Surprisingly warm for such a lightweight coat
  • Soft, beautiful cashmere that feels wonderful against winter layers
  • Easy to style: belted, it looks classic and polished; worn open or loosely tied, it feels relaxed and effortless

What Made Me Pause

There are a few things worth knowing before you buy one.

First, cashmere is delicate. The fabric can be sensitive to friction and moisture, so it's worth being extra careful around rain, snow, and repeated rubbing.

Second, the oversized silhouette won't look the same on everyone. Depending on your proportions and how you style it, the volume can sometimes feel a little too much.

For me, though, that relaxed volume is part of what makes the coat beautiful.

How I Care for My Ludmilla

A cashmere coat needs a little more care than an everyday wool coat.

Always check the care label first and follow those instructions above anything else.

After wearing it, I hang the coat on a proper, sturdy hanger so it can keep its shape. If the surface needs a little refreshing, I use a cashmere brush very gently in the direction of the fabric.

The key word is gently. Vigorous brushing can put unnecessary stress on delicate cashmere fibers.

Should You Buy Ludmilla Direct from Overseas?

This is where my experience gets a little more complicated.

If you're looking for a classic coat that still feels beautiful years later, Ludmilla is absolutely worth considering. It's the kind of piece I can imagine wearing for a very long time.

But I wouldn't recommend buying it online without first seeing and touching it in person, if you have that option.

My first direct order arrived with heavy creasing around the collar and visible fold lines throughout the coat. It looked as though it had been stored or packed poorly somewhere along the way.

I ended up paying for the return shipping and placing another order.

There was another reason I was glad I'd had the chance to compare the two experiences.

The fabric of the first coat felt different from the Ludmilla I'd touched in the boutique. In the store, the cashmere felt soft and fluid. The first coat I received felt noticeably stiffer and had more surface shine than I expected.

It wasn't what I had in mind when I thought of Ludmilla.

So, if you're thinking about buying one, here's what I'd personally do:

Try it on in a physical store first, if possible.

Pay attention not only to the size and silhouette, but also to how the cashmere feels and moves. Once you know exactly what you like, compare the in-store experience with the price of buying directly from overseas.

For a coat at this price point, I think that extra step is worth it.

After all, a beautiful coat isn't just about the label or the price. It's about how it feels when you put it on — and whether you still want to reach for it years from now.

And Ludmilla is one of those coats that, for me, keeps answering that question with a yes.
