Three White Puffers from Fabiana Filippi: How I Layer Them (and Wash Them at Home)

Mornings and evenings have turned chilly. While reorganizing my closet and pulling out winter outerwear, I found three white Fabiana Filippi puffers lined up side by side. As a Fabiana Filippi devotee, I can't say I'm surprised. πŸ˜‚ After seven beige trench coats, here come three white puffers. I really do dig in one direction, don't I?

I bought all three through a personal buying agent, someone who sources pieces I love, like Fabiana Filippi, Peserico and Loro Piana.

Same white, different whites

All three are white, but when you line them up, the shades are subtly different.

  • Light vest: a cool white with a slight blue tint
  • Light down jacket: a warm white with a hint of ivory
  • Puffer: white with a corduroy shell

And all three share one thing: monili. It's Fabiana Filippi's signature trim, tiny metal beads strung in a line, and it becomes the perfect accent on white. A plain puffer suddenly looks polished with just that one detail.

1. The light vest: size 42, worn on top

The vest is a size 42. Honestly, I didn't choose 42. It was the only size left. πŸ˜‚ But since I planned to wear it over the light down jacket, I thought a little extra room would be fine, and luckily it fits well.

It's a cool white, so when I layer it over the ivory-white light down, there's a slight tonal shift between the two whites, which looks quietly stylish.

2. The light down jacket: the do-everything piece

The light down is a size 40, in a white with a touch of ivory. It's light and easy to carry around, and it works with the vest on top or under the corduroy puffer. It truly does everything.

3. The corduroy puffer: wraps you like a cloud, but slides around

The last one is a regular puffer. The shell isn't slick nylon but corduroy, so even though it's a puffer, it feels cozy and refined.

Wearing it feels like being wrapped in a cloud. Your whole body sinks in.

One downside, though: it has a loose, cape-like batwing shape, so it keeps sliding off my shoulders. It never quite settles on my body and keeps shifting around. πŸ˜…

How I layer them

  • Basic: the light down jacket alone
  • A bit chillier: add the vest over the light down (cool white over ivory white, a subtle tone-on-tone)
  • Even colder: wear the corduroy puffer over the light down

I just add or remove one layer depending on the weather, so the three feel less like separate jackets and more like one set.

They're especially perfect for walking my dog. 🐩 I check the weather and add one piece to the light down, and that's it. A true all-purpose walking outfit.

How I wash white puffers

A lot of people worry about washing white puffers. I wash the two light pieces at home.

Since they're filled with goose down, I asked an AI before washing, and it insisted: dry them in the shade, and lay them flat instead of hanging them. πŸ˜‚ I had laundry to do anyway, so I followed that exactly.

  • Water: lukewarm, around 30°C
  • Detergent: wool wash
  • Washing: gently by hand
  • Drying: in the shade, laid flat, not hung

The result? Very happy. They came out clean and kept exactly the same shape as before. No need to be scared of white puffers.

That said, care can differ from piece to piece, so please check the care label inside your jacket before you try this.

For the record, I don't wash the corduroy puffer at home. It goes to the dry cleaner. The two light ones at home, the corduroy one to the cleaner.

What about driving?

In my Fabiana Filippi robe coat post, I complained that long coats are uncomfortable for driving. All three puffers are easy to drive in. The light down jacket is the best of all: light and easy to carry, so taking it on and off in the car is no trouble.

Wrapping up

Layering the three white puffers, I found each one has its own role. What I love most is that the monili trim makes even a puffer look dressed up.

πŸ’‘ One small tip: if you keep your puffers in the same color family, layering them becomes so much easier.

One more tip, not a secret, just something I do: I sometimes use thin Fabiana Filippi knits as a scarf. The fabric is so soft and fine that people assume it's a scarf unless I tell them. :) Tucking it inside the puffer so just a little peeks out looks lovely too.

That was the puffer styling of a woman obsessed with white. 🀍 Do you layer your puffers, or do you just wear one thick one? Let me know in the comments! 😊
